Week 12 - The future of Internet

Was watching this documentary earlier on and it really show a lot of insight to the future of internet.

With the never ending evolutions of the internet, the future of internet is gonna be more than just amazing. The even faster connection of internet, the ever changing ways and every changing security functions that will be implemented onto the internet.

There were also predictions on what will be available in the near future.
Gonna share 3 of the predictions that I had read about online.

1. Audio Web Surfing

With the diligent implementation of Siri, audio surfing may not be a problem in the near future. Instead of having just words recognition, there will be voice and speech recognition.

2. Web Surf Is Possible On ANY Device

With the increase availability of wifi around the world, web surf will not be limited to only on smart phones, tablets or personal computers. On any devices, as long as there's wifi, web surfing is possible.

3. Network Management Will Be More Automated

Managing of networks will no longer require manual work of the workers. There will be automated reboot system, self-diagnosing protocols for computers. Which means, in the future, IT experts are only programming the system one time off and the computers will take care of themselves.

With all these amazing things that are being predicted for the future, the future of internet is going to be AWESOME.

Week 11 - Microsoft VS Google VS Apple

The versus of these 3 giant companies.

Being an apple fan myself, I would definitely vote for apple products over the other two. However, to be really really really fair in the comparisons of these three companies, let's look at the SWOT analysis of each of the company.

So.... what is S.W.O.T?

SWOT analysis is the structured planning method used to evaluate the 4 components as seen on the picture above. SWOT analysis is usually carried out for a product, place, industry and person. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Setting the objective is usually done after the SWOT analysis has been performed. This would allow achievable goals or objectives to be set for the organisation.
  • Strengths: characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over others.
  • Weaknesses: characteristics that place the business or project at a disadvantage relative to others
  • Opportunities: elements that the project could exploit to its advantage
  • Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project
Identification of SWOTs is important for companies because they can inform later steps in planning to achieve the objective.

Now, that you know what are we comparing... Let's see their respective SWOT analysis.

With these analysis, you be the judge on which would you prefer.
My vote is still with apple.

Week 10 - Internet & Journalism

Internet journalism has become more popular than the traditional journalism in the recent years. And we look into why internet journalism has became so popular in the recent years. In comparison to the traditional journalism, internet journalism is almost immediate and you can access the journals from anywhere at anytime.

However, with the rise of internet journalism, how many of us actually proofread what is on the internet. There is actually "no-law" on the internet. People can post whatever that want anytime they like. How many of the news and informations that you had garnered through internet are actually the actual facts without people tampering on the information? There's no certainty to that.

Let's look at the pros and cons of having internet journalism.

With the evolution of the Global Village, internet journalism has become really common. It may not necessary be a bad thing. Government in certain countries may have altered the news that was being printed on the papers and the citizens can find the truths of the stories through internet journalism.

Are you aware of what you are reading? (:

Week 9 - The Power of Internet for Politics

"the power and limitation of internet for political campaigning"

In Singapore, ministers are starting Facebook pages to connect more with the citizens. Even the prime minister and presidents are using the pages to connect to their citizens. News and updates on Singapore are being posted all over the pages. Even political parties have their own Facebook pages to keep the netizens and citizens updated with what they are doing and going to do.

With all these pages being set up, the influence and wide spread of news will be so much easier. News travel faster via online sources as compared to other sources.'

However, there are some limitations to using political campaigning online. Pictures can be edited and then posted up onto these pages. They are also unable to reach the older populations in Singapore who are not using Facebook or the Internet.

With all these being said, it's safe to say that the power of internet for politics is really very big. With most of the citizens of Singapore being connected to the internet. Using these platforms during general elections will be very useful.

Week 8 - Multimedia on the Internet

Out of so many brands in the market, I personally feel that iPhone impresses me the most. Ever since an iPhone land on my hand, I have become their loyal fan since then. Before iPhone, Samsung was the one that impressed me. The interactive games and cool functions that it used to have really attracted me. However, with iPhone, I am able to better navigate around and able to more easily get hold of an app. Downloading has never been so easy. The amount of multimedia you have on iPhone is never ending. Just when you thought you are satisfied with this particular application, a new application with better function come up. iPhones not only have amazing apps, the company is bringing the phones up to another level.

The video below shows how the company is dreaming about having iPhones taking over cameras on runways.

The video below shows how iPhones are actually connecting people all around the world together.

The video below show how the camera on iPhones had been implemented into a even better photo capturing device

All in all, iPhone is the only brand that has impressed me so far. I will not be exploring other brands for the near future.. I hope.

Week 7 - Internet Security

How safe is the Internet?
How safe is your computer?

Coming from a IT background, (my brothers and sisters are graduate with Computer Science [or equivalent] degree), I always think that my computers are very "virus-proof". When I actually started studying my diploma (Engineering Informatics), I had learnt that there is nothing called "virus-proof". Well, the professionals and the makers of MacBook claimed that MacBooks are essentially virus-proof but how much do you actually trust that?

Personally, I do not trust that MacBooks are actually virus-proof. I had installed 2 anti-virus on my MacBook just in case. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

I had ever got attacked by trojan horse before. It wasn't exactly from internet but it was from the transmission of data through a thumb drive.
Removing the virus was the most difficult. Once you are under attack of any virus, your information that you are sharing online will be compromise without you even realising it.

A study being carried every year by Symantec shows the below findings.

Highlights from the 2014 Internet Security Threat Report

Key Findings

  • 91% increase in targeted attacks campaigns in 2013
  • 62% increase in the number of breaches in 2013
  • Over 552M identities were exposed via breaches in 2013
  • 23 zero-day vulnerabilities discovered
  • 38% of mobile users have experienced mobile cybercrime in past 12 months
  • Spam volume dropped to 66% of all email traffic
  • 1 in 392 emails contain a phishing attacks
  • Web-based attacks are up 23%
  • 1 in 8 legitimate websites have a critical vulnerability

With the above statistics, it is hard for you not to be more protective of your computer and what you are seeing on your screen every single day.
